Police: Sexual assault suspect may have other victims in Las Cruces, West Texas

Police have arrested a 53-year-old man suspected of sexually abusing a teenage boy in Las Cruces, and investigators believe there may be more victims in New Mexico and possibly three western Texas cities.

Carlos Ovalle, 53, from block 100 on East Madrid Avenue, was arrested by Las Cruces police on September 11th on charges of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and on charges of criminal sexual contact with a minor. Both cases are fourth-degree offenses.

Las Cruces police investigators learned of the allegations against Ovalle on Saturday September 11th when Ovalle’s girlfriend caught him sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy known to the family. Investigators interviewed the 15-year-old and found that Ovalle began sexually abusing him when he was only 6 years old.

Investigators have already identified two other victims in Las Cruces. Other charges against Ovalle are pending.

Investigators learned that Ovalle has either lived or spent time visiting relatives in three cities in western Texas in recent years: Odessa, Midland, and Big Spring. Investigators have reason to believe that Ovalle harassed children and teenagers in these cities as well.

Anyone who thinks they are a victim or knows someone who might be a victim is asked to call the Las Cruces Police Department at (575) 526-0795.

Ovalle is currently being held in the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
