There are some things more important than football rivalries. The Carlsbad Cavemen will play district rival Organ Mountain in a rare Thursday evening game (Oct. 6). We wish the Cavemen the absolute best, of course, but our prayers are with every player on the field on both sides.
Earlier this year, one of Organ Mountain’s captains, Abraham Romero, passed away after spending several weeks in the hospital. Romero was a linebacker and a running back. He unexpectedly collapsed on Aug. 26 during a game and subsequently took a turn for the worse. He spent several weeks in ICU in El Paso and passed away on Sept. 17.
In his memory, Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima proclaimed September 22 as Abraham Romero Day. The school has been encouraging the hashtag #AbeStrong and schools in Las Cruces conducted several successful fundraisers.
Our prayers are with all of our athletes, and all of the athletes on every opposing team, as the fall sports season continues. We offer our condolences to Romero’s family and friends as they cope with this tragedy.
You may have noticed another change to our busy park around the beach area. New bathrooms have been added along the road near the volleyball courts. This is to accommodate the high numbers of people in the area playing volleyball, basketball and pickleball. A 4v4 sand volleyball tournament is planned as part of this year’s Fall-A-Palooza, which is scheduled for Oct. 8. Meanwhile, a pickleball tournament is scheduled for Oct. 13-16 at those courts a little to the south. The addition of pickleball courts to Carlsbad has been one of the biggest things we’ve ever done, and it’s hard to find a time when the courts aren’t in use. If you are new to pickleball, there are many local residents who would be happy to show you how the game works. We expect to have more announcements about new additions to Carlsbad’s recreational facilities.
On Thursday, I also had the opportunity to participate in a celebration of Head Start Awareness Month. Carlsbad’s Head Start program is located at 1915 San Jose Blvd.
Head Start supports Carlsbad families and provides children with health care, education, social services and meals. Numerous studies have concluded that the Head Start program works very well in terms of providing opportunities for children. Congratulations to Edeylyn Hinojos and everyone with this outstanding Head Start program, and thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.Sincerely,
