Report: DWI suspect dozed while driving, hit semitrailer | Local News

A man who drove his car into a semi-trailer truck on Interstate 25 on Sunday told a Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy that he fell asleep after smoking marijuana behind the wheel, an incident report said.

MPs responded to a report at 4:56 a.m. on Sunday that a car swerved under a semi-trailer in a lane of I-25 heading north near the Cochiti exit.

Benjamin Espinoza, who suffered a broken neck, was charged with drunk and reckless driving behind the wheel. Nobody else was hurt.

Espinoza, who lives with his sister in Rio Rancho, was arrested but not taken into custody because his broken neck required hospitalization, the report said. He was transported to the Christ St. Vincent Regional Medical Center.

While being treated on a stretcher at the scene, Espinoza told MPs he had ingested marijuana before driving and stopped at the edge of the freeway to take a nap, the report said.

After resuming his drive, he fell asleep at the wheel and then turned into a semi-trailer that was driving on an adjacent lane – but he can’t remember the accident, the report said.
