RIDLEY TOWNSHIP – Ridley Township Police Department veteran James Dougherty is the new Police Department captain and Daniel Smith is now a Police Department lieutenant. Dougherty has been a member of the police force for 30 years. Smith joined the troupe in 1998.
Both men were sworn in at the recent meeting of community commissioners by Judge Jack Whelan of the County Court of Common Pleas in Delaware.
Dougherty will replace Scott Willoughby, who is now retired due to a disability.

Rose Tree Place, a watermark retirement community, recently announced their range of courses and excursions for this fall. All offers are open to residents as well as vaccinated seniors in the region; RSVPs are required.

The guests meet at Laurel Hill Cemetery; October 28, 3 p.m. – 3:45 p.m., Delaware County Ghost Stories presented by Dr. Joseph Edgette; On November 8th and 9th, from 7pm to 8pm, the Paul Del Rossi Big Band presents a night full of music and dance.

League of Women Voters presents the Candidate Forum in Chester City
Central Delaware County’s League of Women Voters will host a candidate forum for Chester City Council on Tuesday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m.
The event will be broadcast live on YouTube.
County is hosting a Candidate Forum listing the three candidates for two openings on Chester City Council. Election day is November 2nd. Candidates are the Democrats Stefan Roots and Portia West and the candidate of the Green Party Kearni Warren.

The fall craft market takes place in Havertown on Saturday

The Delco Film Festival returns this weekend
The sixth annual Delco Film Festival is back after a one-year hiatus and will take place both online and in person with free entry, Friday October 8th 7-10pm and Saturday October 9th 2-8pm. The festival is hosted by The Foundry Church, 25 Cedar Rd., Wallingford.
A large selection of short films, feature films, documentaries and more is shown. The following films will be shown on October 9th: A Hidden Star, 2:00 pm; Cuba Libre, 3:30 pm-4:00pm; The place we go, 5 pm-6.30pm; and coffee with God, 7 pm-8.30pm

Players Club presents ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’ from October 8th to 17th
You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown opens on Friday October 8th at the Players Club of Swarthmore and runs through Sunday October 17th. Charlie Brown and the entire Peanuts gang take the stage exploring life’s big questions as they play baseball, fight their homework, sing songs, pass out over their crushes, and celebrate the joy of friendship. This popular musical is directed by Vincent Raspa. For the Sunday shows there are double matinees at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Darby Fire Co. reminds local residents of fire safety tips
On the occasion of Fire Prevention Week from October 3rd to 9th, the Darby Fire Company is cooperating with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®), the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years, to organize this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign to promote. “Learn the sounds of fire protection!”
Dead batteries caused a quarter (26%) of smoke alarm failures, according to the NFPA. All detectors in every household should be properly installed and maintained, replaced every 10 years, and must reflect the needs of everyone in the household, including those with disabilities.
“Without proper preparation, a small emergency can turn into a major incident, causing injuries and deaths,” said Jim Booth, chairman of the fire department and recruitment and retention. “The education and planning of emergency response can be tailored to the needs of everyone in the household and is essential to prevent tragedy.”
DFC encourages community members to adopt this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme and would like to share tips.
* A continuous set of three loud beeps – beep, beep, beep – means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1 and stay outside.
* A single beep every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and needs to be replaced.
* All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
* A beep that continues after the battery has been changed means that the alarm is at the end of its service life and
the device needs to be replaced.
* Make sure smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

Christ Church Invites Congregation to Visit Pumpkin Field
The annual Pumpkin Patch at Christ Church, 104 Nevin St., Ridley Park is bursting at the seams this year with a selection of pumpkins of all sizes and types. The pumpkin field is open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
With the help of Verone’s Collision, Ridley Park Police, Ridley High School Cross Country Team, local Boy Scouts, neighbors, and the Christ Church ward, the church lawn is filled to the brim with pumpkins waiting for people to come and go pick their pumpkins.
The pumpkins come from the Navajo Indian Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico, to Ridley Park. Each pumpkin purchase supports Navajo Nation agriculture for one additional season. In addition, twelve percent of this year’s proceeds will be donated to the Kara Barnard Youth Literacy Fund. The fund promotes literacy among young people and brings books into the hands of children and families in need. In addition, the church in the pumpkin field is organizing a book campaign for new and carefully used books for children and young people. Donations can be made during Pumpkin Patch hours. This Saturday, October 9th, Christ Church kicks off the pumpkin season with a celebration from 1pm to 1pm with live music from the fridge band, popcorn, pumpkin picking and court games.
