Roswell knocks off Mayfield, Trojans remain winless in district play

LAS CRUCES – Roswell defeated Mayfield 49-14 at the Field of Dreams Friday night to drop the Trojans to 4-5 on the season.

Roswell led 13-7 after the first quarter and 42-7 at halftime. Mayfield scored on his second possession of the night but did not score again the remainder of the half. The Trojans allowed 36 unanswered points before scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown with 6:33 left.

Roswell scored on six of his first eight possessions in the first half and recorded one interception and recovered a mishandled kickoff before the intermission. Roswell racked 332 yards of offense in the first half alone, which included two passing plays of more than 40 yards and a 67-yard passing touchdown. The Coyotes returned an interception for a touchdown on Mayfield’s first possession of the second half.

“It was a tough first half. We couldn’t stop them. Heck, we couldn’t stop them in the second half either,” head coach Michael Bradley said. “…We couldn’t stop them. There’s only so much you can do. They had a good game plan, and it’ll be interesting to see what we look like on film tomorrow. They’ve got a good football team , and we knew that coming into this week.”

Roswell scored 36 unanswered points before Mayfield scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 6:33 remaining.

Mayfield quarterback Anthony Carrillo was 4-of-14 passing for 63 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Six Trojan ball carriers combined for 165 rushing yards on 30 carries.

Mayfield concludes its regular season at home against Artesia next week.

“I think our kids could have played better, but at the same time, it’s a good football team on the other side,” Bradley said.

Las Cruces falls to Carlsbad; Hobbs blows past Organ Mountain

Las Cruces High fell to Carlsbad 21-7 to drop to 2-6 on the season and 1-3 in district play. The Bulldawgs trailed 7-0 at halftime. Las Cruces plays Centennial next week.

Hobbs blew by Organ Mountain 48-6 to keep the Knights winless in district play. Hobbs led 41-0 at halftime, and the clock ran continuously after halftime.

Organ Mountain concludes its season at Alamogordo next week.
