San Juan County and New Mexico COVID-19 Cases Decline

FARMINGTON – New Mexico reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 4,496 new cases. That’s 23.6% fewer than the previous week’s 5,881 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

San Juan County reported 232 cases and five deaths in the past week. A week earlier, it had reported 348 cases and nine deaths. 17,511 cases and 522 deaths were reported throughout the pandemic.

Cases decreased in 27 counties across New Mexico, with the best declines in Bernalillo County with 1,072 cases from 1,342 a week earlier; in Eddy County with 264 cases out of 431; and in San Miguel County with 132 cases out of 249.

In New Mexico, 53 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. The previous week, 47 people had been reported dead.

A total of 239,886 people in New Mexico have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 4,605 ​​people have died from the disease, data from Johns Hopkins University shows. In the United States, 40,955,201 people tested positive and 659,970 people have died.

New Mexico had the worst weekly outbreaks per person in Lea County, with 630 cases per 100,000 per week; Chaves County at 528; and San Miguel County at 484. The Centers for Disease Control say high transmission rates in the community start at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Most of the total new cases were Bernalillo County with 1,072 cases; Lea County with 448 cases; and Dona Ana County at 394. Weekly case numbers were up in five counties from the previous week. The strongest increases compared to the previous week’s pace were recorded in the counties of Sandoval, Sierra and Mora.

New Mexico was ranked 37th among the states where the coronavirus spread fastest per person, according to an analysis by the USA TODAY Network of data from Johns Hopkins University. Last week, coronavirus cases in the United States were down 11.9% from the previous week, with 1,010,209 cases reported. At 0.63% of the country’s population, New Mexico had 0.45% of the country’s cases last week. Across the country, 19 states had more cases in the past week than the week before.

Some governments may have delayed reporting beyond the Labor Day holiday, and people who would normally have been tested may then not have been tested. Weekly comparisons can be inaccurate.

New Mexico ranked 8th among the states for the proportion of people who received at least one vaccination, with 71.1% of residents being at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 63.1%, according to an analysis of USA TODAY’s CDC data. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are most commonly used in the United States, require two doses given a few weeks apart.

For the week that ended Sunday, New Mexico reported that an additional 24,046 vaccine doses were administered, including 10,031 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 38,569 vaccine doses, including 18,697 initial doses. In total, New Mexico reported that it delivered 2,697,750 total doses.
