San Juan County COVID reported 267 COVID-19 cases, 4 deaths this week

FARMINGTON – New Mexico reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 4,068 new cases. That’s 15.8% fewer than the previous week’s 4,834 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

San Juan County reported 267 cases and four deaths in the past week. A week earlier, it had reported 281 cases and five deaths. 18,059 cases and 531 deaths were reported throughout the pandemic.

In New Mexico, 74 people were reported dead from COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the previous week, 70 people had been reported dead.

Most of the total new cases were Bernalillo County with 1,048 cases; Dona Ana County with 311 cases; and San Juan County at 267. Weekly case numbers were up in 13 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the previous week’s pace were in the counties of Valencia, Santa Fe and Quay.

New Mexico was ranked 40th among states where coronavirus spread fastest per person, according to an analysis by the USA TODAY Network of data from Johns Hopkins University.

Last week, coronavirus cases in the United States were down 18.9% from the previous week, with 837,185 cases reported. With 0.63% of the country’s population, New Mexico had 0.49% of the country’s cases last week.

Across the country, 10 states had more cases in the past week than the week before. Cases decreased in 18 counties across New Mexico, with the best declines in Bernalillo County with 1,048 cases from 1,271 a week earlier; in Lea County with 260 cases out of 453; and in Dona Ana County with 311 cases out of 437.

New Mexico ranked 7th among the states for the proportion of people who received at least one vaccination, with 71.9% of residents being at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 64%, according to a US TODAY analysis of the CDC data. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are most commonly used in the United States, require two doses given a few weeks apart.

For the week that ended Wednesday, New Mexico reported an additional 31,324 doses of vaccine, including 11,406 initial doses. In the previous week, the state administered 33,535 vaccine doses, including 13,609 initial doses. In total, New Mexico reported that it delivered 2,745,654 total doses.

New Mexico had the worst weekly outbreaks per person in Quay County, with 679 cases per 100,000 per week; Eddy County at 416; and Guadalupe County at 395. The Centers for Disease Control say high transmission rates in the community start at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

A total of 248,788 people in New Mexico have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 4,749 people have died from the disease, data from Johns Hopkins University shows. In the United States, 42,931,354 people tested positive and 688,032 people have died.
