Santa Fe Catholic allowed five runs in the first two innings and couldn’t recover as Winter Gardent Foundation defeated the Crimson Hawks, 6-2, on Saturday night in the Class 2A, Region 2 semifinals.
During the regular season, Santa Fe (18-11) twice by scores of 11-1 and 4-3.
This time, Foundation jumped on Santa Fe early, scoring three runs in the first inning then adding two in the second, and never looked back.
Foundation lead-off batter Zachary Grzeszczak set the tone with a triple. Then after a walk, Braden Holcomb homered on a line drive to left off Santa Fe starter Peter Walsh.
In the second inning, Grzeszczak, who was the winning pitcher, doubled home a run then later scored on a wild pitch.
Walsh lasted just 1 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. In his previous outing against Foundation, he allowed just one run on six hits in four innings. He ends the season 4-5 with a 3.61 ERA.
Santa Fe managed just three hits off Foundation, all singles by Walsh, Marvin Montenegro and Easton Beach.
The Crimson Hawks scored both their runs in the fifth inning. Jose Burey drew a leadoff walk then later scored on wild pitch. Canyon Marcewicz reached on an error and later scored on Anthony Franzino’s infield groundout.
