Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

Saturday is the first personal Lobo basketball game

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – Saturday will be the first time since March 2020 that Lobo basketball fans will see their team play in person at The Pit. The University of New Mexico shares its plan for the safety of all.

Fans were not allowed to visit The Pit for the entire 2020-21 season but this year they will be back and hopefully in true Lobo fashion, The Pit will be full. “It gets loud, in a word. I think it will be loud, it will be electric, I’m super excited, ”said UNM Junior Kameron Urban.

This basketball season has some COVID safe protocols in place. COVID vaccines are not required, but wearing a mask is required except when eating or drinking.

“We’ve certainly had some season ticket holders and some others say they just prefer not to come to a game when they have to wear a mask. We got this feedback but we understand this will likely be a little less year for ticket sales due to the mask mandate, but it is what it is. We’ll make the most of it and get The Pit rocking again, ”said David Williams, UNM’s Deputy Sports Director.

Lobo fans say their excitement outweighs a mask. “It bothers me a little because it’s hard to breathe with these things, you know what I mean? But at the same time, I was mad last year because I couldn’t see the game or couldn’t be there, ”said Lobo fan Joe Archuleta.

While cheering for a mask isn’t ideal, fans are grateful for the privilege of being able to return to The Pit. “The student section at The Pit will definitely show up. I don’t think a thin piece of fabric will stop us from reaching 110%, ”said Urban. “I also realize that it can be taken away at any time and I don’t think anyone will take this music box for granted for a second.”

The men’s game “Cherry and Silver” takes place on Saturday at 2 pm. The ladies’ play takes place on Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
