| SFNF Issues Closure Order for Additional Areas on Jemez Ranger District for Post-Fire RisksNM Fire Info

Several Popular Recreation Sites Are Exempt from the Order and Remain Open

SANTA FE, NM – July 1, 2022 – The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) today issued an additional closure order to protect public health and safety in the event of potential post-fire impacts from the Cerro Pelado Fire, including debris flow and flash flooding. Closure order no. 10-519 joins the earlier Order No. 10-515, and both will remain in effect until respinded or until Dec. 31, 2022, whichever comes earlier.

The closure order prohibits members of the public from entering the restricted area, including all Forest Service lands, roads and trails, within an area on the Jemez Ranger District roughly defined by NM Highway 4 at the Las Casitas Fishing Site, then following the forest boundary southeast to the boundary with the Pueblo of Jemez, then heading east to the forest boundary with the Bandelier National Monument, following that boundary north to the boundary of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, then following that boundary west and then north to the intersection with NM Highway 4, and finally heading south to the starting point at the Las Casitas Fishing Site.

Although several popular developed recreation sites are within the restricted order, the Jemez Ranger District exempted them from the order. The following recreation sites remain open to the public:

  • Redondo Campground
  • East Fork Trailhead and Picnic Area
  • Trail 137 between East Fork Trailhead and Las Conchas Trailhead
  • Las Conchas Trailhead
  • Las Conchas Fishing Access

Federal, state and local officers, firefighters and members of an organized rescue team, and any others authorized by Forest Service permits are exempt from the closure order.

Violation of the closure order is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, imprisonment of not more than six months, or both.

The closure order and map are posted on the SFNF website, and copies are available at SFNF headquarters and the Jemez Ranger District Office. For additional information, please contact the Jemez Ranger District at 575-829-3535. All current closure orders are posted on the Alerts and Notices page of the website.
