SMU and BYU head to Albuquerque for the New Mexico Bowl

The New Mexico Bowl is getting a high profile matchup, as well as a potential prime time slot, for its upcoming game December 17.BYU is coming to Albuquerque, to face SMU, in a matchup of two teams that posted 7-5 records during the regular season. It’s the first appearance for the Mustangs in the New Mexico Bowl. The Cougars are here for the second time. Both teams come into this game on a roll. SMU won four of its last five games, and features the nation’s 11th best scoring offense. BYU was nationally ranked for much of the season, and will bring a three game winning streak into the matchup.”We’ve got a game, and we’ve got a matchup that many, many, many other bowls and other cities would like right now,” New Mexico Bowl Executive Director Jeff Siembieda said. “There’s a lot of people that are envious of our matchup, our time slot. We’ve got something pretty special.”Kickoff is currently scheduled for 12:15 pm, December 17. There is a chance that the game will be flexed to a 5:30 p.m. kick-off time. Should the NFL decide to flex the December 18 matchup between Las Vegas and New England out of its current prime time slot, kickoff for the Las Vegas Bowl, which is scheduled for December 17, will be 12:15. The New Mexico Bowl would kickoff at 5:30 pm, and would be televised on KOAT.”These are two programs that are finishing strong, two programs who made it very clear they want to be in this game,” Siembieda said. “Two programs with a lot of history, with great fan bases, with tradition. What’s not to like about this matchup. This is tremendous.”
