Sparky’s wins ‘best green chile cheeseburger’ at NM State Fair

ALBUQUERQUE – Southern New Mexico came out on top at the New Mexico State Fair Monday, proving the Chile Capital of the World has the best green chile cheeseburger in the state.

Sparky’s Burgers, BBQ, & Espresso, a Hatch staple of destination dining, took top honors in the fair’s annual Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge. Six restaurants from around the state competed this year, with most coming from the Albuquerque/Rio Rancho area.

Each restaurant presented its best green chile cheeseburger for judges to blind test Monday afternoon. Fairgoers had the chance to participate in the People’s Choice judging as well.

Sparky’s was proclaimed the “Green Chile Cheeseburger Champion” while Big Mike’s Burgers & More out of Belen was the People’s Choice winner.

According to a spokesperson for the fair, the competition winner in 2018, 2019 and 2021 was Oso Grill from Capitan. They were not among the restaurants that competed this year.

Teako Nunn, owner of Sparky's BBQ and Espresso in Hatch, stands with a replica New Mexico Historic Marker sign that was once a prop at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. The sign gives the history of the Sparkys site, and promotes the Farm & Ranch Museum.

People can try Sparky’s award-winning green chile cheeseburger for themselves in Hatch. The restaurant is located at 15 Franklin St. and is open from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm Thursday through Sunday and closed Monday through Wednesday.

The state fair continues through Sunday, Sept. 18 in Albuquerque at Expo New Mexico with more competitions, livestock showing and entertainment.
