ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – The Office of the Treasurer of Bernalillo County announced that this year’s property tax bill has been delayed, meaning the due dates have also been postponed. Nancy Bearce, Bernalillo County Treasurer, explains what the law says and what it means to property owners.

State law (HB407-2019) that allowed school districts to ask for a mill tax question on ballot papers in November resulted in delayed shipping and due dates for the first half of property tax payments. The law affects 14 New Mexico counties.

Bernalillo County reports that the delayed dates are as follows:

  • December 1, 2021 – Property tax invoices are sent
  • December 10, 2021 – payment date
  • Jan 10, 2022 – Final property tax due date for the first half with no late penalties and interest

The second half of property taxes will continue as planned from April 10, 2022, with May 10, 2022 being the final due date. The district states that for semi-annual payments, the first payment will be made on January 7, 2022, and the second payment on or around May 9, 2022.

Those with monthly payments can still pay the usual amount. The mortgage lenders have been notified and will pay taxes on time.
