Supt. Elder Inducted into Anderson Hall of Fame

APS Superintendent School Elder was honored by the UNM Anderson School of Management as an extraordinary alum who has achieved professional success, made significant contributions to the community, and serves as a role model.

Supt. Elder was inducted into the Anderson Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the University of New Mexico business school on Nov. 8.

Elder completed his MBA from Anderson in 2017. He also holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science and Spanish as well as a master of secondary education degree from UNM.

“I am honored and humbled to be inducted into the Anderson Hall of Fame,” Supt. Elder said. “I am a proud Lobo alum who appreciates the opportunities and experiences my UNM education has provided. I am grateful for all those who supported me through this journey, especially my family, friends, coworkers, and the APS Board of Education.”

Before being named APS superintendent in 2020, Supt. Elder was the APS Chief Operations Officer. He has worked for the district since 1991, when he began his career teaching English as a Second Language at Highland High School. He went on to serve as principal at four local schools before moving to the district office.

“Scott is a passionate supporter of public education and an advocate for quality teaching. He recently launched an initiative to improve the leadership skills of APS principals. He believes that this investment in management is vital to improving student outcomes,” the UNM Anderson School of Management wrote on its Facebook page.

Supt. Elder is a third-generation New Mexican, and his family has a long history with APS: his mother worked for the district for 20 years, and his grandfather was a school board member off and on from 1945 through 1969.

Supt. Elder and his wife, Dr. Deborah Elder, have been happily married for 28 years, and they have two sons, Sam and David, who are both Lobos.

Fun fact: As an undergrad, Scott was Lobo Louie!
