The 2021-2022 season of the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra begins this weekend

LAS CRUCES – The 2021-2022 season of the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra starts this weekend with classical music by Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Stravinsky.

The musical group, entering its 63rd year, consists of music faculties from the New Mexico State University Department of Music, community musicians, and guest artists. Your upcoming season will consist of five concerts from October to May 2022.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the previous season of the LCSO consisted only of a virtual concert and a fundraiser in November.

Music director and conductor Lonnie Klein stepped down from the symphony in May 2021 and guest conductors will be represented in the vacant position on the board this season. Concerts also serve as auditions for the permanent position as a conductor.

Tickets for individual concerts can be purchased online at lascrucessymphony.com. The doors open 30 minutes before the start of each concert.

Classic 1

  • When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 2nd and 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3rd
  • When: NMSU’s Atkinson Recital Hall
  • Conductor: Ming Luke
  • Music: Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5 “Reformation”; Beethoven: Egmont Overture; Stravinsky: Firebird Suite

Classic 2

  • When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 11th. and 3 p.m. Sunday, 12.12.
  • Where: NMSU’s Atkinson Recital Hall
  • Conductor: Richard Lee CPE
  • Music: Bach: Symphony No. 1 in D major; Mozart: Symphony in D major “Paris” Schubert: Symphony in B minor “Unfinished”; Mahler: “Adagio” from Symphony No. 10

Pops

  • When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 12th and 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 13th
  • Where: NMSU’s Atkinson Recital Hall
  • Conductor: Conductor Emeritus Lonnie Klein
  • Music: The Earth, Wind and Fire tribute band Serpentine Fire will play music by the legendary group supported by the LCSO

Classic 3

  • When: Saturday, March 12th, 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 13th, 3:00 pm
  • Where: NMSU’s Atkinson Recital Hall
  • Conductor: Devin Patrick Hughes
  • Music: Ginastera: Four dances from “Estancia”; Kodály: Dances of Galánta; Harbach: Lilia Polka; Beethoven: Symphony No. 7

Classic 4

  • When: 7.30pm Saturday April 30th and 3pm Sunday May 1st
  • Where: NMSU’s Atkinson Recital Hall
  • Conductor: Gene Chang
  • Music: Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin; Copland: Spring in the Appalachian Mountains; Pärt: Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten; Mozart: Symphony No. 36 “Linz”
