The Bossy Gourmet takes first place in the state fair salsa competition

ALBUQUERQUE – Las Cruces-based salsa company The Bossy Gourmet won first place in the annual Battle of the Salsas at the New Mexico State Fair.

The Bossy Gourmet competed against six other salsas from across the state in the agricultural building yard at the Expo New Mexico Exhibition Center on Saturday. The award is presented by the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.

Bossy Gourmet’s Hatch Green Chile Salsa took first place using locally sourced Hatch Green chilli. The salsa is said to have a medium but robust taste.

“The recipe for green chilli salsa is based on my mother’s recipe that she made for my sisters and me when we were growing up. Our goal is to bring authentic new Mexican salsa to the table for salsa lovers everywhere, ”said co-owner Lori Alvarez in a press release.

The company has been in production since 2015 and won the title “Best in the State” in 2018. They also won first place in the Scovie Awards on the National Fiery Foods Show in 2019.

Their salsas can be purchased online at httpthebossygourmet.com. They recently unveiled a new product – Hatch Flame Roasted Green Chile – which sold out in about four hours on the first day of the Hatch Chile Festival this year. Their website also sells red chilli sauce and jalapeño salsa.

“We know it’s good,” said co-owner Lenny Pelifian. “But it’s so nice to be rated by the public and they think the same thing, so we feel like we’re on the right track.”

Alvarez and Pelifian both recognized the state Department of Agriculture, the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico State University, and the Arrowhead Center for supporting their small business.
