The Charreada Photo Exhibit opens February 4 at the Branigan Cultural Center

bulletin report

The Branigan Cultural Center (BCC), 501 N. Main St. Downtown, is opening a new exhibit, “Charreada,” on Friday, February 4th. The exhibition, which runs through Saturday April 23, features photographs by Las Cruces photographer Mel Stone of the Mexican rodeo arena and charreada, and the know-how of the riders who compete in their competitive events.

“Stone’s photographs capture the drama and excitement of the Mexican rodeo arena and charreada. From the backstage preparations for the women’s horse show to a man riding a bucking bronco or practicing lasso moves on the sidelines, Stone brings to life a tradition that dates back to the early settlement of Mexico,” the city said Las Cruces in a press release.

“The Charreada is a nine-event men’s competition that demonstrates the skill and ability of the lasso, control of a horse and other animal handling techniques,” the press release reads. “A 10th equestrian tournament for women was established, called Escaramuza, (in which) teams of women in colorful, decorative outfits participate in riding horses in precisely choreographed patterns.”

The BCC is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum is accessible via Stop 1 of RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1.
