Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

The Las Cruces filmmaker premieres the short horror film “Crawl” on October 3rd at the Fountain Theater.

“Crawl”, a short film by writer, director and producer Ryan Rox from Las Cruces, premieres on Sunday, October 3rd at 4:45 pm at the Fountain Theater, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, in the historic Mesilla Plaza.

Tickets are $ 9. The doors open at 4 p.m. The premiere will be followed by a meet & greet with Rox and the cast of “Crawl!”.

“Crawl”, a short horror film, is the first film that Rox made. The cast includes Brandon Lee Camarena Abeyta, Dan Williams, Nora Brown, Jessica Jimenez, Nick Check and Rox.

The premiere also includes screenings of “Bedridden”, in which Rox plays, and his second horror short film “Quiet Hours”.

“Last year we couldn’t really go out on Halloween, but the horror marathons on TV and new horror releases on streaming platforms made up for it,” Rox told the bulletin. “I was so inspired by these films and some of the serial killer documentaries I’ve seen that I’ve decided to do my own horror movie around this time (October 2021) next year … and here we are!

Rox said he wrote “Crawl” in two weeks and cast the film in late 2020. He completed the pre-production of the film and funded it through crowdfunding until March of this year. Filming began on April 3rd in Las Cruces and lasted four days into June.

“Everything I knew about filmmaking came from what I learned as an actor in them,” said Rox. “Surprisingly, the set experience and YouTube were my ‘crash course teachers in film schools’.

“One of my greatest, if not the greatest, inspirations as a filmmaker is Quentin Tarantino,” he said, “and as he once said, ‘When people ask me if I went to film school, I tell them,’ No, I went to film. ‘“The best way to learn is by doing, and I’ve done it. I learned so much on the first day. It’s so much more work than people think, but it’s also so much more rewarding – and I don’t mean that financially.

“It’s an indescribable feeling to have such talented people working so hard to bring something to life that one day you imagined in your head,” said Rox. “Fortunately, as an actor who had worked on student and local short films for the past few years, I was able to bring people with me that I already knew were great and trustworthy.

“I think the last year and a half has been tough for everyone, including creatives in the film industry,” he said. “In the face of the pain in the world, our first instinct as creators was to do what we do best, which is to entertain. So I was really excited to be able to hire local film industry staff, crew and actors for something we all need right now – entertainment. Horror movies got me through a Halloween quarantine in 2020, and I hope ‘Crawl’ will take your mind off any pain you might be feeling this October, even if it only lasts for half an hour.

The film was shot entirely in Las Cruces, with the exception of one scene that was shot in El Paso, he said, and consists entirely of local talent, crew and cast.

The film was named Best New Mexico Short Film for May-June 2021 at the Mindfield Film Festival in Albuquerque.

Rox said “Crawl” was not rated, “but has some scary moments and language, so discretion is recommended for viewers.”
