The Las Cruces youth football team reaches the championship game

The Las Cruces Irish reached the championship game of the Alamogordo Preps Youth Football League on Friday.

With no league at Las Cruces, the Irish traveled to Alamogordo every weekend, finishing 8-2 before losing to the Alamogordo Bulldogs in Friday’s championship game.

The Irish consist of players between the ages of 10 and 12 and are divided into two squads.

“We had 65 kids from Las Cruces so we split up the team and traveled every weekend,” said Manny Frias, assistant coach.

Frias said the New Mexico state administration allowed the Irish to train at Aggie Memorial Stadium on Thursday night before the championship game.

The Irish were trained by Jesse Gonzales with assistants Jason Hayes, Mark Dominguez, Manny Frias, David Beasley, Estevan Arroyo and David Munoz.

“Not only were the parents very supportive of these children, but also NMSU sports director Mario Moccia and his wife Heidi Moccia made it possible for us to use the NMSU stadium this week,” said Frias.
