Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

This is America’s most dangerous city – 24/7 Wall St.

What is crime in America like based on FBI stats for 2020? The number of violent crimes per 100,000 US population rose for the first time since 2016. The number of homicides rose faster than ever since 1905 in 2020. The US had 398.5 violent crimes per 100,000 population last year, up from 380.8 per 100,000 population in 2019.

Using data from the FBI’s 2020 Uniform Crime Report (UCR), 24/7 Wall St. identified the most dangerous subway area in the United States – Memphis.

In 2020, more than 18,000 violent crimes were reported in the metropolitan area, or 1,359 per 100,000 population – 21.3% more than in 2019 and three times as much violent crime in the United States. The number of homicides committed in Memphis rose 38%, from 237 in 2019 to 327 in 2020. At 24.2 per 100,000 people, the homicide rate in Memphis is the second highest of any metropolitan area in the United States.

Deadly violence continues to rise in Memphis. The city has so far reported more homicides in 2021 than in the same period last year. City guides have plans to curb criminal violence in the city but are reported to need hundreds of additional police officers to implement these plans. The department is reportedly offering a $ 15,000 signature bonus to aid recruiting efforts.

According to the FBI’s comparison of the characteristics of reported crime, young adults ages 20-29 were more likely to be involved in violent crimes than any other age group; the most common place for violent crime was at home; and weapons have been used to commit a very large number of these crimes. (This is the state that sells the most weapons.)

Following the national trend, most major metropolitan areas saw an increase in criminal violence in 2020. As across the country, the increase in many of these metropolitan areas has been led by an increase in homicides.

Crime is disproportionately high in low-income communities in the United States. One study found that people with family incomes less than $ 15,000 per year are three times more likely to be victims of crime than people with family incomes of $ 75,000 or more.

Crime is a local phenomenon that is influenced by a variety of factors at the national, state, municipal, and private levels. Population density, economic conditions, employment rates, legal policies, law enforcement practices, community attitudes towards crime and policing, and other factors can all influence crime activity and reporting. As a result, reported crime in the United States can vary significantly from location to location.

Violent crime includes murder, non-negligent homicide, rape, robbery, and assault. The violent crime rate per 100,000 population was calculated using population data from the FBI. Limited data was available in UCR 2020 for areas in Alabama, Illinois, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, although these locations were not excluded from the analysis.

Additional information on the number of murders and the population within the jurisdictions reporting figures to the FBI is also taken from the FBI UCR 2020. Poverty rates are annual estimates from the US Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey.
