Two Buff athletes receive prestigious postseason awards

CANYON – Hannah Kelley-Lusk was named Ron Lenz Division II Conference Commissioners Association Women’s Footballer of the Year 2021 on Wednesday.

The senior striker was also named First Team D2CCA All-American and First Team United Soccer Coaches All-South Central Region.

Kelley-Lusk, the country’s top goalscorer, ended her senior season with a record 26 goals and thus took first place in the WT best list for goals in one season.

The Farmington, New Mexico native also took first place in four other offensive categories: Total Points (62), Goals Per Game (1.44), Points Per Game (3.44), and Shots On Goal (3.28).

She was named Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, Academic Player of the Year and Forward of the Year – making her the first player in league history to receive three special awards in the same season. The senior was also named D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year and was named USC National Player of the Week twice that season.

West Texas A&M Football

Tobias Harris was named First Team All-American of the American Football Coaches Association on Wednesday.

It is the second time Harris has received the AFCA First Team All-America Award after being named a Return Specialist in 2019. The Pflugerville product also received the First Team All-Region and First Team All-Lone Star Conference awards during its junior campaign.

Harris ended the season with a total of 40 tackles (23 solo), followed by six interceptions, 0.5 sacks, 1.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and three pass breakups. Harris has 16 career interceptions and ranks second all-time at West Texas A&M. He returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns in 2021.

West Texas A&MMen’s soccer

Four members of the West Texas A&M men’s soccer team were recognized for their achievements on the field when they were named All-South Central Region by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

Giancarlo Saldana and Chris Palomino moved to the All-American pick after receiving awards for the first team, while Anthony Perea and Rotem Weiss each received awards for the second team.

Torrey Miller and Chandler Vogel each received their second AVCA All-American award on Tuesday afternoon.

Miller currently ranks 15th in the nation for kills per set (4.08) while putting together 5.0 kills per set during the NCAA tournament. The Brownwood product made a historic performance in the South Central Regional Championship Match, recording 33 kills high in her career, making it only the eighth Lady Buff in program history to hit the brand.

Vogel will go down in the record books as one of the best liberos to take the place for the Lady Buffs. The Hereford native was named Libero of the Year by the Lone Star Conference, making him the first player in the history of the league to receive an individual award four years in a row. With her 78 excavations from the regional tournament, the senior has now reached a total of 2,659 careers, which takes third place among the currently active players in Division II.

LUBBOCK – The Lady Buffs faced their fourth-placed opponent of the season on Tuesday night and battled the Lubbock No. 2 Christian Lady Chaps for 40 minutes before falling 60:49 in a regional off-conference action when the LCU made their 94 Successive Victory Celebrated at the Rip Griffin Center.

Alivia Lewis stepped into the WT offensive and scored a team high of 12 points that was accompanied by eight rebounds and one steal. Karley Motschenbacher ended the night with nine points, grabbed seven boards and registered five steals.

Ashton Duncan led the Lady Chaps when she went 8 out of 15 out of the field, including 4 out of 10 from deep to target with a game high of 20, followed by Juliana Robertson with 11 following 15 boards for a doubles doubles .

West Texas A&M Men’s basketball

West Texas A&M men’s basketball advanced to fourth place in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 rankings announced Tuesday, the third regular season.

Lubbock Christian remained in first place at the top of the rankings with 14 votes, followed by Northwest Missouri State (two votes in first place) and Mercyhurst. WT moved up one place to fourth, with Nova Southeastern in fifth, followed by Indiana, Chico State, Augusta, Queens and West Liberty to round out the top 10.
