Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 101 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 288 areas from August 2021 to August 2021. The largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey, at 10.1 percent. The largest gain in the number of total jobs occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (497,800).

In August 2022, an additional five metropolitan areas had over-the-year employment increases of at least 6.0 percent: Athens-Clarke County, Georgia (6.7 percent); Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (6.7 percent); Mankato-North Mankato, Minnesota (6.3 percent); Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (6.2 percent); and Farmington, New Mexico (6.0 percent).

Employment increases of at least 200,000 occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania, as well as Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (260,700) and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Illinois-Indiana-Wisconsin (201,200), from August 2021 to August 2022.
