Victory Christian routs Universal, Santa Fe wins in 2A-7

LAKELAND — Victory Christian is a building program and it used its opening round match of the Class 2A, District 7 tournament to give to all its players as the result was never in doubt.

The Storm controlled the match the start and defeated Universal, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon at home.

The match likely would have ended earlier had head coach Jamie Lemmond kept his starters on the field in their regular positions instead of going to his bench early.

Midfielders Abby Tattrie with three assists and Hayden Fullwood with two assists were playmakers, setting up their teammates for goals.

Fullwood, Nevaeh Haygood, Gaby Figueroa and Sylvia Rodriguez all scored in the first half to give Victory the 5-0 lead.

With Lemmond moving players around, goalkeeper Alaina Fountain saw action at forward as did defender Karen Romero and they finished off the scoring in the second half with a goal apiece.

Fountain and Amber Choquette combined in goal for the shutout.

Center backs Ella Lewis and Heather Batts led the defense, and Ava Schrock, Isabella White and Amaya Dobie also played strong defense breaking up the attacks by the Falcons (1-11-2).

However, now it gets tougher for Victory Christian (12-5-1) as it plays in the semifinals against All Saints at 5:30 pm on Monday in the district semifinals at LCS. In their regular-season matchup, the two teams tied 2-2 in early December in their only match of the regular season.
