Viola Carbajal Obituary (1937 – 2022) – Las Cruces, NM

Viola Carbajal (Flora), 84, of Las Cruces, NM, passed away on August 3, 2022 in Las Cruces, NM.
Viola was born in Hanover, NM (Santa Rita, NM mining area) to Francisco Carbajal and Maria Elena Cordova on September 25, 1937. Viola graduated from Las Cruces Union High School in 1956.
Viola worked at White Sands Missile Range for 27 years working in various departments and had many fond memories that she shared with her family and friends over the years, such as the time President John F. Kennedy visited White Sands Missile Range, when the space shuttle landed and fired the missiles. She would remember fondly the scientists, engineers and many soldiers and civilian personnel she met and worked with along the way. After retiring from White Sands, Viola went on to work for the Veterans Administration in Phoenix, AZ. Viola was a devout Catholic throughout her lifetime and she was a devoted mother to her four children. She thoroughly loved and adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, godchildren and friends she made along her life journey. Viola loved to read books, listen to Mexican music, go for long walks, watch Mexican telenovelas, play Bingo and go to the casinos.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco Carbajal and Maria Elena Cordova, two brothers, Alvino Carbajal and David Carbajal, her sister Rita Carbajal Pena, her son Joseph Anthony Cardon, her daughter Marie Therese (Terri) Cardon Sanchez and her ex- husband Primitivo Cardon Jr.
Viola is survived by her son, Ronald Cardon (Anna), her daughter, Katherine Cardon, her grandchildren, Nicholes Cardon, Shanna Sanchez, Veronica Sanchez, Naomi Sanchez, her great grandchildren, Ariana, Alonna, Joseph and Ethan, her sister Frances Munoz and her half-brother Cesar Carbajal.
Viola’s family would like to extend a special heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated staff members at Sage Crest – Caliber Post-Acute for their care of Viola since 2016. The staff members were truly loving individuals that cared for her daily needs as she battled Parkinson’s debilitating disease . They are truly HEROES for the work that they do. As well as to the doctors and nurses that cared for her at Memorial Medical Center and Mountain View Medical Center over the years. To her Sage Crest roommate, Kathy, who for several years was kind and helpful to Viola, in so many ways and especially helped Viola stay connected to her family during a very hard COVID pandemic year.
Viola has chosen to be cremated and services are scheduled to begin on August 22, 2022 with the Rosary at 1:00pm and following at 1:30pm with the celebratory Mass at St. Genevieve Catholic Church, 100 S. Espina Street, Las Cruces, NM 88001. Interment of her cremains will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, across from St. Genevieve Catholic Church. Father Theophine Okafor will officiate the services.
