W&L Men’s Swimming ends the regular season with a 174-87 win over VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men’s swim team defeated VMI 174-87 on Saturday afternoon to close out the 2021-22 regular season.

Highlights of the meeting:

– W&L won 10 of 14 events at the meet, with 10 swimmers collectively winning individual and relay events. Individually, seven different swimmers won eight races.

– First-grader Stephen Ewing (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces) was the only W&L swimmer to have multiple individual wins when he competed in the 500 Free (4:55.46) and the 1000 Free (10:10.13) as the first touched.

Senior Steve Warren (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and first years Luke Nagel (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Matt Fritz (Reston, Va./South Lakes) all won an individual race and swam in a winning relay. Warren and Fritz swam the 200 individual medley (1:34.45) in the relay, while Warren won the 100 breaststroke (58.05) and Fritz the 100 backstroke (53.50). Nagel was the winner in the 200m free (1:46.70) and opened for the 400m free relay (3:13.87).

– Runner-up Will Hughes (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary) and first year Devin Bateman (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) were also involved in several wins as they both swam in every relay.

The Generals return to the pool on February 11 when they travel to Greensboro, NC for day one of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.
