TO UPDATE: Las Cruces police said Sunday that a traffic stop resulted in a stalemate and shootout, in which the suspect was killed and a bystander hospitalized.
The traffic stop happened around 8 p.m. on Saturday near the intersection of 5th Street and Wilson Avenue, where police say the man driving the car opened fire on the officers before escaping and taking them to one Chase led.
That chase ended on 4th Street and Davis Avenue when the driver refused to get out of the car and a stalemate lasted over two hours, according to police.
Authorities said the stalemate ended in an exchange of fire – the suspect shot officers and police returned fire.
The driver died on the scene while another man nearby, who was not involved in the incident, was shot and injured. He was performed in stable condition at the University of El Paso Medical Center on Sunday.
As with all official shootings, a task force including prosecutors and state police investigated the incident.
