2020 second-degree murder conviction, stabbing at Hatch

LAS CRUCES, NM (AP) — A 37-year-old New Mexico man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend in Hatch in 2020.

A Las Cruces jury found Salvador Gonzales guilty on Friday.

Evidence presented during the trial included video taken by a neighbor showing Gonzales stabbing Juan Ruiz Flores multiple times in April 2020, prosecutors said. They said Gonzales was drinking before the two men got into an argument that led to a fist fight and eventually a stabbing.

Gonzales’ attorney argued he was acting in self-defense.

He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted at a later date, prosecutors said.
