The City of Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science (MONAS) and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society present “Science Café – Processes and Sources of Nutrient and Contaminants in Coastal Surface Waters and Estuarine Embayments” with guest speaker Geoffrey Tick, Ph.D.

“Coastal regions around the world are experiencing severe environmental degradation due to rapid population growth, associated anthropogenic activities, climate change, overdevelopment of water resources and lack of proper management,” the city said in a press release. During the presentation, participants will “examine recent chemical characterization methods (dual isotopic and forensic geochemistry) that are used to identify and narrow the sources and fate of nitrate in shallow groundwater. Such tools can be tremendously valuable in developing improved strategies for water resource management, risk assessments and mitigation / remedial action, ”the city said.
Tick is a pollutant hydrogeologist who completed his Ph.D. in the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources at the University of Arizona. His research is focused on understanding the factors and processes that affect the fate and transport of pollutants in soil and groundwater, the city said. He uses this information to develop and evaluate innovative methods for characterizing and cleaning up underground contamination across multiple scales.
