WT Track & Field is traveling to UCCS this weekend

West Texas A&M is heading to Colorado this weekend to attend the UCSS Meet No. 1, which takes place Friday and Saturday at UCCS ‘Indoor Mountain Lion Fieldhouse in Colorado Springs.

WT will have 14 athletes compete at UCCS, two of them in the heptathlon, four in the pole vault and eight in the long and triple jump.

Gerard Bryant and Traise Cain will compete in the heptathlon for the first time this season. Bryant finished seventh at the Lone Star Conference Championships last season with a personal best of 6,418 points, while Cain will make his college debut in Colorado.

WT will have four starters in the pole vault, three of them in the men. Dawson Gilliam, Dylan Gilliam and Gabe Imery will be battling it out for the Buffs this weekend, while Junior Jayna Lueders will be battling it out for the Lady Buffs.

Hunter Warminski makes his debut in the men’s long jump in the jumpers, while seven Lady Buffs compete in the long and triple jump. Freshman Hekla Magnusdottir will compete in three disciplines for the WT in the women’s high, long and triple jump, while Rebecca Schlenker and Miriam Zanovello each compete in the long and triple jump.

Alexis McGill in the second year competes in the triple jump on Saturday with teammate Jenna Murray. Freshman Landry Overby will make her college debut in the women’s high jump while Daniela Pesic from Zagreb and Croatia will compete in the long jump.

WT women’s football

Hannah Kelley-Lusk received another academic honor when the Lady Buffs forward was named Division II College Sports Information Director of America Academic All-American of the Year for women’s football.

She is the first Lady Buff in program history to deserve this honor.

Kelley-Lusk will complete a Masters in Exercise and Exercise Science with a current grade point average of 4.0. Based in Farmington, New Mexico, the product graduated with a 3.61 degree in Communication Disorders from her bachelor’s degree and was also named LSC Women’s Footballer of the Year.

Kelley-Lusk was a four-year-old starter named the League’s Forward of the Year after leading the Lady Buffs to a 14-6-0 record. During her time at Canyon, she started in 66 games and finished her career with 57 total goals, 24 assists, 138 points and 321 shots with 16 game winners.

WT women’s basketball

Women’s basketball head coach Josh Prock has announced that Lady Buff Alumni Weekend will take place January 7-8 at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.

The weekend kicks off on the evening of January 7th with an alumni reception where former Lady Buffs are welcome back to reconnect with teammates while they meet the current team, coaching staff and administration.

Alumni and their families are invited to join the Lady Buffs in their morning shoot-around on January 8, before being honored against UT Tyler at halftime on Saturday.

WT baseball

Baseball head coach Matt Vanderburg and his staff have announced the addition of Blake Wolf to WT’s high school signature class as he joins Brayden Franco, Jaxen Monkerud and Kaden Monkerud for the 2023 campaign.

Wolf is currently a senior at Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, where he was a second-team performer across the Hill District last season for the Mustangs under head coach Russell Kreneck. He threw 41 1/3 innings while setting a 4-2 record with 39 strikeouts. On the plate, Wolf had a batting average of 0.314 and recorded nine RBIs.

Right-handed Braden Austin joined the team on Friday for the 2022 campaign.

A native of Phoenix, he comes to Canyon after a season at Wallace-Dothan Community College in Dothan, Alabama, where he graduated as an Associate of Arts under head coach Mackey Sasser. The right-handed player made four appearances for the Govs, allowing only two hits with a pair of strikeouts in his 1.2 innings.

Austin spent his true freshman season at Phoenix College, where he made 11 appearances and scored 20 in his 11 innings of work with a 1-0 all-time record along with a save. The right-handed woman graduated from Cactus Shadows High School in 2017.

The Buffs will kick off their 2022 campaign from February 4-5 to host the Bob Sloan Baseball Classic at Wilder Park, with encounters against the New Mexico Highlands and Colorado State-Pueblo.
