Aaron Small Jr. leads P.K. Yonge over Santa Fe

PK Yonge recovered from a bumpy track for a 30-16 high school football win over Santa Fe Friday in front of a homecomer.

Here are the key takeaways from the game:

Aaron Small Jr. dominates

AJ Small, the untied senior, scored a total of four touchdowns, including a 20-yard run to lead PK Yonge by two points early in the second quarter. Three of his touchdowns came in the first half to give the Blue Wave a lead they wouldn’t give up. He ended the evening with two roaring touchdowns and two more passes.

The explosive pieces by Blue Wave

All three of the Blue Waves touchdowns in the first half were 20 yards or more. The first, a 53-yard swipe from Smalls to Tyson Doering, son of Gator Great Chris Doering, to get the party started. Smalls scored again later in the half, this time with Cameron Pedro for a 46-yard touchdown.

“Over the week we’ve seen in the movie, they’ve been doing a lot of man-defense and there are few people in the state who can take both Jaren Hamilton and Cameron Pedro out,” said Blue Wave trainer Kevin Doelling. “Whichever way they wanted to tail, we wanted to throw the opposite and it ended up with Cameron Pedro on a big throw.”

Santa Fe lost 11 starters

Raiders (0-5) head coach Jared Allen says the most important thing for his team is getting healthy.

“We lost 11 starters from our Kickoff Classic.” said Allen. “It just keeps fighting its way through adversity. We play people who are not used to playing, we play people in places where they are not used to playing, so it’s frustrating at times. ”

Santa Fe plays Fernandina Beach on Thursday for a short week.

PK Yonge wins sales battle

The Blue Wave (2-3) won the sales battle 3-0 by recording three interceptions. Although he didn’t know who was starting out as quarterback for Santa Fe, Doelling was convinced of his game plan.

“Your backup quarterback was one of my ex-boys, so we knew if it was Devin Mitchem, his twin Devonta Mitchem, or Austin Cardozo, we had a good idea because I’ve been coaching these kids for a while.”

PK Yonge will face Tocoi Creek on Friday next week.

“Many of my high school friends are trainers there,” says Dölling.
