Ledes from the Land of Enchantment

Weather Mars Organ Mountain Invitation Cross-Country Meeting

By Dave Burge

The weather may not have cooperated, but Organ Mountain High School’s cross-country program got the college races in place on Saturday, September 25th when it hosted its own Rob Winter Classic meetup.

The boys’ university race was delayed by about an hour because of a lightning strike. Then another lightning delay was called before the girls’ races and the junior varsity / open races.

After a downpour, the JV / Open races were canceled due to the stagnant water on the track and the impact on the ground, said Organ Mountain coach David Nunez.

In the boys’ university race, Organ Mountain came second in the team standings behind El Paso Franklin.

Brett Bybee of the Knights finished fourth in the boys’ college with a time of 16 minutes, 19.03 seconds over 3.1 miles.

Teammate Jeron Wisner was fifth (16: 23.74) and Andrew Parks was 11th (16: 47.69). Luis Pastor from El Paso Coronado was the top boy finisher at 3: 26.95 p.m.

Also for Organ Mountain, Corbin Coombs was 13th and Jonathan Torres 19th.

Dax Rios of Centennial turned 17th.

Centennial was fifth and Las Cruces eighth in the boys’ team classification.

In the girls’ university, Jossyln Ochoa from Organ Mountain took 11th place at 20: 36.37.

Maykalia Hill of Organ Mountain was 23rd and Mayfields Layla Lazarin was 26th.

Organ Mountain took fifth place in the girls’ team ranking. El Paso Franklin was the girls’ team winner. Las Cruces, Centennial and Mayfield finished seven to ninth.

“I thought the guys and gals at college for our Organ Mountain program did a great job against very tough competition in El Paso and New Mexico,” said Nunez. “Special thanks to our wonderful cross-country parents, (Organ Mountain) Athletic Director Louie Lucero, (Assistant Principal) Dennis Padilla and sponsors for all of their help and support.”
