Las Cruces, NM – NM State made its first trek to the Lone Star state Saturday to take on SEC opponent Texas A&M at Ellis Field in College Station, and while the Crimson & White recorded the first goal of the season against the vaunted Aggie defense, it wasn’t enough, falling 2-1.

SCORING SUMMARY
13′ | Texas A&M came out of the gate swinging tallying five shots within the first 13 minutes of action, the last one by Taylor Pounds blocked by Aggie goalkeeper Makenna Gottschalk.
16′ | Loma McNeese picked up the first shot on goal attempt of the afternoon for the Crimson & White, missing high, hitting the bottom left corner of the goal but saved by Texas A&M.
28′ | Within 12 seconds of each other, Gottschalk recorded two saves in the center of the net to keep the game tied at zero.
35′ | The Aggies from College Station scored first, squeezing a shot through the left side of the net off a header by Macy Matula.
43′ | Nearing the halfway point Texas A&M picked up a pair of corner kicks snuffed out by the NM State defense to keep the score 1-0.
Half | NM State was tested earlier and often in half number one, facing 14 shots and five corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of action. Makenna Gottschalk recorded a quartet of saves, while Texas A&M keeper Kenna Caldwell recorded one save off three Aggie shots.
50′ | Landy Williams notched the first NM State shot attempt of the second half, missing up top.
57′ | Gottschalk was tested early in the second half when a shot by Malie Hayes came flying in, but the Crimson & White goalie was able to swat it away for her fifth and final save on the day.
59′ | After a long chip by Thalia Chaverria over a crowd of NM State and Texas A&M Aggies, Bianca Chacon was able to knock in a shot past Texas A&M goalie Kenna Caldwell to tie things up 1-1.

70′ | Kate Colvin of Texas A&M crossed the ball from the right side over to MaKhiya McDonald, who chipped a grounder into the far-left corner of the goal to make it 2-1 for the Aggies from College Station.
85′ | Brooke Shultz recorded the final NM State shot of the night, missing high above the goal.

KEY PERFORMANCES

  • Bianca Chacon scored her first goal of the season and the third of her career, while Thalia Chaverria recorded the first assist in her collegiate career.
  • Makenna Gottschalk recorded five saves, her second most of the season behind six saves notched in a 2-0 loss to Oregon (8/18)
  • In a physical bout, the Aggies of NM State and Texas A&M combined for 19 fouls, with four yellow cards called against the Crimson & White (Hernandez, Johannes, Gottschalk, Chaverria
  • Seven different Aggies recorded shots in the game (Tapia, Chacon, Johannes, McNeese, Schultz, Hernandez, Williams)

UP NEXT
NM State women’s soccer returns to the Three Crosses for their first official home match of the season, in a matchup with longtime rival UTEP at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex on Thursday, September 1st. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm, and begins the first of a five-game home stand for the Aggies. This marks the first time the Miners have visited Las Cruces, since 2019, where NM State fell 2-1 in 2OT.
