Centennial bounces back from La Cueva loss, rolls Mayfield

LAS CRUCES – Centennial knocked off Mayfield 49-13 Friday night at Field of Dreams to improve to 3-1 and drop the Trojans to 2-2.

The clock ran continuously after halftime once Centennial took a 49-6 lead at the intermission, and the Trojans narrowly avoided having the game called due to the New Mexico Activities Association’s 50-point-deficit mercy rule. Centennial led 28-0 after the first quarter, and Mayfield did not pick up a first down until its fifth offensive possession. The Hawks inserted their reserves on their final drive of the first half.

“It definitely feels good. (Now) we want to play good against the next rival,” Centennial head coach Aaron Ocampo said.

Centennial ran in a 45-yard touchdown on its first offensive play from scrimmage and took a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mayfield answered with a 43-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter but did not score again until the final minutes. The Hawks responded with 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to ensure the clock would run continuously after halftime. Centennial stretched the lead to 36 after going up 42-6 late in the second quarter.

Running back Mikah Gutierrez had two rushing touchdowns and returned one kickoff for a score. Sophomore quarterback Daniel Hernandez passed for three touchdowns and ran for one more.

Mayfield quarterback Anthony Carrillo passed for one touchdown and running back Diego Guerra ran for one score.

“Overall, the defense played really tough, and the offense seemed to play really well too,” Ocampo said. Hopefully this is a building point for future games. …I guess I’m happy with where we are at this point. Our next game is (Organ Mountain), and I know they’re a hell of a team. They’ve got big kids and tough kids, so I know that’s going to be a really big challenge for us.”

Centennial is on bye next week before playing Organ Mountain Sept 23. Mayfield takes on Las Cruces High next Friday.

Organ Mountain falls in Rio Rancho

Organ Mountain dropped to 2-2 with a 20-10 loss to Rio Rancho.

The Knights trailed 7-3 before being delayed due to lightning. Organ Mountain briefly led 10-7 before Rio Rancho scored 13 unanswered points.

Organ Mountain returns to Las Cruces next week for a home game Thursday against Gadsden.
