LAS CRUCES – Concerts, festivals and more are on the lineup this week in the Las Cruces area to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

The Mexican holiday, celebrated on May 5 each year, commemorates Mexico’s triumph over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862 during the Franco-Mexican War. Contrary to what many often believe, the day is not Mexican Independence Day. That holiday is celebrated Sept. 16 each year.

While Cinco de Mayo is a minor Mexican holiday, it’s become a large commemoration of Mexican culture in the US

Mega Trivia at Broken Spoke Taphouse

Broken Spoke Taphouse is kicking off Cinco de Mayo week on Wednesday, May 4 with Mega Trivia. Team registration starts at 5:30 pm with trivia starting at 7:30 pm on the Amador lawn. Tables are limited and are first come, first served.

DJ Mike G and Vivez will be the entertainment for the night.

Amador Dayz at AmadorLIVE

AmadorLIVE is hosting its Amador Dayz music festival May 5-7 with headliners including Frank Ray, Bri Bagwell and Chris Pérez. Tickets are $50 for each day if purchased online at amadorlive.com. A beer garden will also be set up for attendees.

Hike with Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks

Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks, an organization devoted to conservation and advocacy of the national monument, is hosting a hike at Tortugas Mountain (“A” Mountain). The hike will start at 6 pm May 5 at the Monte Vista Trail on the back side of the mountain.

The trail is easy and everyone is welcome to join. There will also be tacos on hand for participants.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on the plaza

The Town of Mesilla will once again host their annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta May 7 and 8 on the historic plaza. On Saturday, from noon to 10 pm, and on Sunday, from noon to 7 pm, live mariachi music will fill the town. Ballet folklorico performances will also be featured.

Andele Restaurant is sponsoring piñatas and a greased pole to add to the fun. The event is free all weekend and everyone is welcome. Restaurants and shops will also be open for customers.
