Events honoring the military continue as Veterans Day approaches

After the Veterans Day parade last weekend, several more events are planned to honor active and retired military personnel in the area. Veteran’s day is Thursday.

Stand down planned for veterans

LAS CRUCES – A Stand Down for Veterans provides free services to homeless veterans, veterans at risk of homelessness, and all veterans in need.

The event will take place on Wednesday, November 10th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at JM Carriere VFW Post 10124 on 709 S. Valley Drive. There, veterans have access to veteran administration, housing services, VA disability, social security, dental care, legal assistance, haircuts, and more. Cooked breakfast is served from 7.30am and lunch is also available. Relatives of veterans are also welcome.

The Stand Down for Veterans is modeled on a concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe haven for units returning from combat. To volunteer, request additional information, or receive veteran assistance, contact Veteran Len Hampton at 575-405-9001 or email [email protected].

City of Las Cruces hoists garrison flag

LAS CRUCES – On Veterans Day, the garrison flag of the city of Las Cruces is hoisted in the Veterans Memorial Park on Roadrunner Parkway. The big flag will be hoisted on Thursday, November 11th at 8 a.m. and lowered again at 5 p.m.

Volunteers are welcome to help Las Cruces and veterans from southern New Mexico raise and lower the flag. There are no official ceremonies.

20. Heal the Troops event in T or C

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES – BodyWorx Healing Massage is holding its 20th annual Heal the Troops event for veterans and their families, as well as active military personnel, from November 11th to 30th.

Visit the Pelican Spa at 300 S. Pershing St. on Veterans Day from 11 am-7pm for free facial masks. Couples can book free massage appointments until the end of November and take part in the Warrior Wellness Workshops. Walk-ins are welcome.

The workshops take place on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Participants will learn about relaxation techniques, Seal Team Breathing, oils and herbs that heal and relieve chronic pain.

LAS CRUCES – Allen Theaters is showing its appreciation for veterans by offering a free movie ticket to those with proof of military service on Thursday November 11th. Redeem the offer at Cineport 10 or Telshor 12.

The Museum of Space History waives entry fees for military and veterans

ALAMOGORDO – Veterans, active duty members, and National Guard personnel are invited to visit the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Entry to the museum for these staff and their families is free.

Free haircuts for veterans and service members at Sport Clips

LAS CRUCES – Sport Clips locations in Las Cruces and across the country will host the company’s annual Veterans Day haircut event.

On or before November 11th, $ 2 per haircut service will support the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarships for service members and veterans. Participating locations also offer free haircuts to veterans and active soldiers with military IDs.

Since 2013, Sport Clips locations across the country have been working to help U.S. Soldiers and Veterans transition to a civilian career through Help A Hero. Scholarships cover educational expenses, often in excess of what is covered by GI Bill funds.

To date, Sport Clips and its clients have raised more than $ 9.2 million in VFW-managed scholarships. This year’s goal is to raise $ 1.5 million that will enable scholarships of up to $ 5,000 for service members and veterans studying at post-secondary institutions, including business schools. Veterans and the active military have free access to state parks

NEW MEXICO – The Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources (EMNRD), State Parks Division, announced that in recognition of Veterans Day on Thursday 11th, families will have access to the state parks for free day use and camping over Night.

“On Veterans Day, we would like to honor and thank all New Mexico veterans for their service by offering them free access to their 35 state parks,” said Toby Velásquez, director of state parks. “I would also like to acknowledge our many past and current State Park employees for their service to our country.”

In a longstanding partnership with the New Mexico Department of Veteran Services, the State Parks Division also honors New Mexico veterans with a service-related disability of at least 50% with an annual day pass and a 3-day camping pass per year.

The Week of Appreciation for the Military and Veterans continues at the NMSU

LAS CRUCES – This year marks the beginning of the sixth annual NMSU Military and Veteran Recognition Week. Students, faculty and staff who have served in the past / present are extremely valuable to us and we thank them deeply for their sacrifice / service. The remaining planned events include:

Thursday November 11th

  • NMSU Women Veterans Day, ROTC / Armed Forces Recruiters Day and Veterans Day Carnival, hosted by SVO behind Young Hall, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Friday November 12th

  • NMSU Faculty / Staff Military Veterans Banquet, Retired Army General Jack R. Fox will speak at the Villanueva Victory Club at the NMSU Fulton Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Free meals for veterans

Golden Corral will celebrate its Military Appreciation Night on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11th, from 5pm to 8pm. Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, 2021 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Active members of the military or veterans receive a free meal.

Several other restaurants also have Veterans Day specials.
