Gov. plans with Las Cruces business, elected leaders; Visit with Fort Bliss tour

LAS CRUCES – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham visited Doña Ana County and the surrounding area on Friday, meeting with local business leaders and elected officials to recognize achievements and to discuss worrying issues for southern New Mexico and how the state administration serves the needs of their communities .

“I wish I could stay one more day and help beat the Aggies in their home game tomorrow,” said Governor Lujan Grisham. “But I’m confident they will make us proud, and I’m incredibly glad that after so many months of phone calls and Zoom meetings, I was able to meet and speak in person to so many people in southern New Mexico. We have invested heavily in the economic development of this region and it is very exciting to speak to the local leaders who are helping us diversify and revitalize this essential part of our great state. “

The governor convened a meeting with area business leaders in the Santa Teresa border zone, a focus of government efforts to build New Mexico’s manufacturing base by moving overseas jobs and US companies relocating or expanding into a region which offers a strategic binational location. As of January 2019, several Taiwanese companies, including Xxentria and Cymmetrik Technologies, have announced plans to develop manufacturing space in Santa Teresa and create a North American presence, while Wisconsin-based packaging maker Prent Corp. Foot factory with plans to employ 85 workers with government support.

In total, over nearly three years, the Lujan Grisham government has invested $ 10.68 million in Local Economic Development Act investments in Doña Ana County businesses, creating over 1,000 high-paying jobs, and $ 11 million in Incentive programs for vocational training in the county to support more than 2,500 jobs.

The governor also met with elected Las Cruces district officials to seek their input on the political direction of the state ahead of the 30-day legislature early next year and how state agencies can continue to effectively serve voters in southern New Mexico.

The governor is also scheduled to travel to the nearby Fort Bliss military base on Friday afternoon, where the federal government is temporarily accommodating evacuees from Afghanistan who are undergoing medical and security clearance prior to relocation to the U.S. late Friday to Santa Fe.
