Starting October 24th, all local calls must include an area code before the phone number. If you are currently dialing 555-1212, you will need to add the area code and dial 575-555-1212.
Please start adding area codes to your contact lists now and use 10-digit numbers to minimize interference. This change affects the entire state of New Mexico and includes both the 575 and 505 area codes.
The following remains the same:
· Phone numbers, including area codes, are not changed.
· The cost of phone calls, coverage areas and services remain the same. Local calls remain local even if more digits are dialed.
· Long distance calls continue to follow the format 1+ area code + telephone number.
· 911 stays the same.
This change is being driven by the Federal Communications Commission to enable “988,” making it easier for Americans in crisis to get the help they need and to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health issues. Starting July 16, 2022, calling 988 will forward calls to the National Lifeline for Suicide Prevention and Mental Health. Until then, the National Lifeline for Suicide Prevention and Mental Crisis can be reached at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). .
