Las Cruces Church supports Afghan refugees in the resettlement program

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KTSM) – As a partner of the Afghan Placement & Assistance Program, the El Calvario Immigrant Advocacy Center in Las Cruces will begin resettling Afghan refugees as part of the Refugee Resettlement Program.

“El Calvario will give every newcomer a warm welcome and help them get a fresh start in their new life in our communities,” said El Calvario officials.

“El Calvario expects and welcomes the first group of refugees in the next few weeks, who will then have to be accommodated. These newcomers will arrive with nothing but clothes on their backs. We have provided emergency humanitarian aid so far and will need volunteers to help in a variety of services, especially Dari and Pashto translation. “

George Miller, Pastor of the Methodist Church in El Calvario

The individuals and families settling in the Las Cruces, New Mexico, and greater New Mexico area and El Paso, Texas area will be from military bases across the country, officials said in a press release.

Upon arrival, individuals and families will receive assistance with housing, transportation, employment and other benefits to which they are entitled.

“We look forward to welcoming our new New Mexicans. I hope our communities across New Mexico and El Paso show their compassion and respond positively to this first of many opportunities to trade with their time and donations. “
