Las Cruces hands Deming Lady ‘Cats sixth straight loss to District 3-5

DEMING – Fighting in District 3-5A continued for the Deming High Lady Wildcats college volleyball team on Saturday. The Las Cruces High Bulldawgs scored a lopsided 25-12, 25-11 and 25-15 match win to keep up with the league-leading Centennial High Hawks. The ‘Dawgs have a strong second place in the district with 6-1 and 13-5 for the season overall.

The Bulldawgs continue to maintain a successful program based on dedication and a competitive club program out of season in Las Cruces. That was evident in Saturday’s game, in which the ‘Dawgs used various opportunities to score points. They hit from the service line, at the net and from the back line, keeping the Lady ‘Cats guessing and keeping on their heels defensively.

Deming (7-8 and 0-6) played well in the sprints but was unable to sustain a rally that could have turned the tide. The Lady ‘Cats were led by senior women Lily McMillan, Bianca Valverde and Maria Gomez and junior women Moniqa Enciso and Victoria Baca. Support was provided by the seniors Rose Solis, Mariah Pacheco and Belen Carrilo as well as the junior Rheganne Cabrera and the second grader Brizella Baeza.

In the third game, the Lady ‘Cats had a 4-0 lead. Two side-out points, an uncorrected mistake and a serve that was long cleared resulted in Deming and the Bulldawgs never looked back.

Deming High’s quest for the elusive first District 3-5A match win could take place on Tuesday when the Lady ‘Cats travel to Anthony, NM to play the Gadsden High Panthers. The Panthers are 7-10 in the overall standings and 1-5 in the league game. The Panthers defeated the Alamogordo High Tigers 3-1 at home on October 9th.

As for their recent joint opponents, the Lady ‘Cats lost in a five-game set to the Tigers in Alamogordo on September 28th.
