Las Cruces’ Horse N Hound closing for good after 40 years

LAS CRUCES – After nearly 40 years operating in Las Cruces, Horse N Hound announced this week that their doors would be closing for good Saturday, May 14.

The “Feed N Supply” store has been serving the community since 1983. This week, they posted on Facebook announcing their closure on May 7. Customer response to the announcement was “overwhelming” and led to the business pushing their closure date to May 14 Everything in the store is currently 30% off.

Wade Stearns has been an employee of Horse N Hound off and on for several years while he also juggled classes at New Mexico State University. He said business has been slow for the past six months or so. Though, since the closure was announced, customers have flocked back.

The vacant Horse 'N' Hound feed store on Amador Avenue in Las Cruces is seen on Monday, June 21, 2021.

“Monday and Tuesday, after we announced we were closing and that we were having a sale … it was one of the busiest days we’ve had in weeks,” Stearns said.

The Sun News reached out to owner Clay Franklin, but he could not be reached for comment.

According to their website, Horse N Hound was opened in 1983 by Edge and LaRue Edgmon. It was a Purina Feed Store at the time in a warehouse on Amador near the train tracks. It moved up the street when the Edgmons sold the business to their grandson, Curtis Creighton. He took over the business in 2005 and established it in the area in front of Community of Hope.

The store offers feed and supplies for pets as well as horses, cattle, poultry and other livestock.

Franklin, of Feed Innovations LLC, took over Horse N Hound in 2020, after the City of Las Cruces purchased the building they were operating from. Casa de Peregrinos food program took over the vacated area while the feed store relocated to 208 N. Motel Blvd.

The store will continue to be open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 3 pm until May 14.
