Las Cruces police seek help with a suspected death

Las Cruces Police are seeking help from the public in investigating the September 5 death of 31-year-old Matthew Portillo, whose body was discovered on Juniper Avenue early Sunday morning.

Just before 7 a.m. on Sunday, September 5, the Las Cruces police were dispatched to the 1000 block of Juniper Avenue by a passerby who spotted an unresponsive man on the sidewalk. Police and firefighters arrived and found that the man identified as Matthew Portillo had died.

The cause of Portillo’s death was initially unknown. It is now known that his death was a result of foul play.

Investigators learned that Portillo was seen at the Rad Retrocade Bar at 201 N. Main St. on Saturday evening, and possibly through Sunday morning. Anyone with information on how they got off Rad Retrocade or who they’ve been with is asked to call the Las Cruces Police Department.

Las Cruces-Dona Ana County Crime Stoppers is offering a $ 2,000 reward for information that helps identify the person or persons responsible for Portillo’s death. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Las Cruces Police Department immediately at (575) 526-0795. Tips can be given anonymously by calling Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477. Tips can also be given via the Las Cruces Crime Stoppers app “P3 TIPS”. Those who give tips via Crime Stoppers do not have to leave their own name and remain completely anonymous.
