Las Cruces receives a $ 75,000 WaterSMART grant from the US Bureau of Reclamation

The city of Las Cruces has received a WaterSMART Small-Scale Water Efficiency Grant of US $ 75,000 from the US Bureau of Reclamation.

The grant will be used to install SMART irrigation technology for the efficient use of water to irrigate parks and ball fields. According to the US Bureau of Reclamation. Las Cruces is one of 82 water improvement projects in 16 western states that share $ 5.5 million in grant funds from the Bureau of Reclamation.

The grant will be used to install a smart irrigation system in four city parks and two recreation complexes. The system will include evapotranspiration technologies, flow management, cycle and soak functions and will be centrally controlled. The total area of the parks and fields to be managed by the project is 58.25 acres. These include Burn Lake Park, High Noon Soccer Complex, Sunrise Terrace Park, Valley View Park, and Young Park.

The project will reduce the wastage of irrigation water and the need for labor. The efficient use of water resources is a primary goal of the city’s water saving plan. This funding will expand a project that began with a 2019 Bureau of Reclamation grant that tested smart irrigation technology in the fields at Hadley Sports Complex and Apodaca Park.

The Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART Small-Scale Water Efficiency Grants will help local communities improve water efficiency.

This program is part of the US Department of Interior’s WaterSMART program, which focuses on improving water conservation and reliability while helping water resource managers make informed decisions about water use. The Bureau of Reclamation is a federal agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior and the largest water wholesaler and second largest producer of hydropower in the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation facilities, which also provide significant flood protection, recreational opportunities, and environmental benefits.
