Las Cruces shelter prepares for the potential lift of Title 42

During the month of April, border patrol agents encountered nearly 8,000 migrants at the Southwest border.With the potential lift of Title 42 there could be tons more. Migrant shelter workers say they are already overwhelmed. El Calvario Methodist Church in Las Cruces is known as a pitstop for people seeking asylum in the US The shelter says they’ve seen hundreds of people from all over the world. Nayeli Saenz, the Assistant Shelter Director said “We have a Russian family, we have people from Turkey and we have people from Haiti.”El Calvario is a temporary home for people on their way to their families in the US Saenz said “They get here and we make them feel comfortable. They can shower and we give them a warm plate of food.” The people at shelters like this are dropped off by border patrol or ice and have already started the asylum process.They have 100 migrants coming through every week.”Right now we could probably take more people but because they are staying longer it makes it difficult with our capacity,” said Saenz. She says with Title 42 in limbo right now they are trying to get more volunteers.”It’s critical for us to have volunteers. Pretty much like our foundation,” Saenz said.”We are a nonprofit, we are a small church and sometimes we have to use our own time to become volunteers,” she said. Although it’s still unclear whether or not Title 42 will be lifted the church is still trying to prepare for when that moment does come.
