Las Cruces’ Sun News newsletter highlights the reporting process

LAS CRUCES – The Sun News of Las Cruces recently published a new newsletter – The Reporter’s Notebook. Our goal for this weekly newsletter – delivered to your email inbox weekly – is to bring transparency to our reporting and pull back the curtain on our process.

By subscribing to this newsletter, you can get a behind-the-scenes look—meet the reporters behind the lines and how they found the stories we cover.

Our reporters are diverse and come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We do our best to represent the city in which we operate.

The newsletter is written by me, Damien Willis. I started at Sun-News in late 2014. I was with the newspaper for about three years — before making a brief stint in government communications, first with the 3rd Circuit Attorney’s Office, then with Las Cruces Public Schools.

But I found it more rewarding to report and serve my community. So I ended up returning to the newspaper as senior reporter and content coach.

At the end of 2021 we started talking about this newsletter. By becoming a subscriber, you’ll receive a roundup of our week’s top stories every Monday morning, and you’ll also learn a little more about our local reporters and their experiences of covering the stories.

We speak to the reporters behind the week’s top stories and pull back the curtain on our reporting process. We’ll talk about how these stories came about and how we were able to share them with you.

This newsletter is a companion to our recently launched podcast – also called “The Reporter’s Notebook” – which has the same goal. These are the stories of reporters who live and work in your community, telling stories that we think are important to you.

Whether it’s business, city government, county government, national news or education, we want to take you behind the reporting process and share some of our great reports. We hope you will subscribe and share this newsletter with your friends.

We hope you’ll enjoy learning a little more about how these stories come together – as you step into the editorial office and learn what makes us laugh, salivate, and lash out. Our common goal is to bring you the news you need.
