LaVonne Davidson Thorp Obituary (1925 – 2022) – Las Cruces, NM

LaVonne Eryleen Davidson Thorp, (Vonne), age 96, entered eternal life on April 15, 2022, Good Friday, in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
She was born in Bismark, North Dakota, 1925, to parents Thelma LaVonne Harding, and Lynn Davidson.
She met the love of her life, Gordon Johannes Thorp, in Jamestown, North Dakota, and were childhood sweethearts until they married in 1946. After Gordon’s service in the US Navy was completed after WWII, they settled in the small town of Las Cruces, New Mexico, where Gordon attended New Mexico A & M college.
It was in Las Cruces at the university, where Vonne and Gordon first met Sybil Schatzabel and her husband Bob, and they all ultimately became lifelong best friends that included Sybil and Bob’s children. This was the start of what was to become Vonne’s many family members over her lifetime.
Vonne was a devoted wife and homemaker, excellent seamstress, wonderful baker, and fantastic cook. She specialized in crocheting and knitting beautiful afghans and slippers.
But most of all, our beloved Vonne was “godmother” to us all, showering us with her love, her genuine heart of gold, and her wonderful, enriching life stories. We will miss her dearly.
Vonne was also a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
Vonne is preceded in death by her husband Gordon, her mother Thelma, Marvin Thorp, (Brother-in-law). James Thorp, and Donald Thorp, (Nephews), Margit Thorp Sathre (Mother-in-law) and her husband Ingvald Sathre. Sybil and Bob Schatzabel, Patci Schatzabel, and Amy Salazar Wardlaw.
Vonne is survived by her God-daughter Jeffie Schatzabel Nevarez and her spouse Patrick Dominguez, Melissa Nevarez, her son Anthony Nevarez and his wife Athena, their sons Eliazar, (Eli) and Anthony Jr. (AJ), Luisa Nevarez Cervantes, and her son Mario Cervantes.
Other family members include Kyle Dominguez and his wife Maria. Skip Schatzabel and wife Rosemary, daughter Leah Schatzabel and son Matthew Schatzabel. Theresa Salazar, Tayshia Salazar Rodgers, and husband Alex, and their children Mikayla, Layla, Alex Jr, and Cruz. Ariel Cortez, her son Asaph. Gabriel Pacheco, George Pacheco, and Bella America Wardlaw. Judy Strevel, long-time friend and part-time caregiver.
Additional family members include, Jackie Thorp (Sister-in-Law), sons John, Eric, and Gerald Thorp, daughters Ellen Kaiser, and Marion Eckhardt.
Services are scheduled for Sunday May 22nd, 2022 at 2:00 pm, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 518 Alameda Blvd. The Reverend Jonathan Hanneman will officiate the services. Following the church services, an immediate family gathering of The Ennichement ceremony will be held in the Kendrick Chapel Collumbarium.
