Lobos Open Conference with Spartans Starting Friday – University of New Mexico Lobos athletics

ALBUQUERQUE, NM— After a solid non-conference tournament schedule, the Lobo softball team begins Mountain West competition on the road at San Jose State with a three-game series starting Friday.

All three games will be streamed on the Mountain West Network and will have live stats available. Friday’s game is scheduled to start at 7 pm MT, Saturday’s game at 4 pm MT and Sunday’s game at 1 pm MT.

It could be a big weekend for UNM with Andrea Howard currently tied for the program record in career home runs with 39. Howard has had a sensational senior season with 10 home runs to date, and leads the conference in total bases (71), is tied for the conference lead in home runs and RBI (32) and is third in slugging percentage (.888), fifth in batting average (.400) and tied for third in runs scored (24). She also leads the Lobos in doubles (five) and triples (two) and is second in walks (14).

Four different Lobos enter conference play with on-base streaks larger than one game, led by 13 games for Peyton Robinson and Ashley Archuleta. Howard has a seven-game streak, and Savana Martinez has a two-game streak. Additionally, Robinson has a 13-game hitting streak, followed by 10 for Archuleta and two for Howard and Martinez.

UNM is fourth among MW teams in slugging percentage (.442) and runs scored (130), third in home runs (21), tied for third in hits (202) and fifth in on-base percentage (.368). In the circle, the Lobos are fourth in ERA (2.56) and opposing batting average (.234), but lead in batters struck out looking (51) and third in overall strikeouts (150).

The Spartans enter conference play 14-9 and 7-2 at home after hosting the SVC Classic II last weekend. SJSU beat Idaho State (5-2) and Utah State (6-2, didn’t count as a conference game) and lost to Idaho State (2-1) and UC Davis (2-1).

SJSU played a common opponent with the Lobos in Santa Clara, winning 9-0 (6 innings) and 12-4 (6 innings).

Alyssa Graham leads the Spartans in batting average (.395), hits (32), doubles (8) and total bases (53) and is tied for the team high in home runs with three. Karizma Bergesen also has three home runs on the season, while also having 11 RBI (second on the team). Trenity Edwards leads with 12 RBI behind 27 hits and four doubles. Jenessa Ullegue leads with a .667 slugging percentage and 1,147 OPS with eight hits, four walks, two home runs and five RBI. Jessica Giacoma has three triples and three doubles among her 13 hits this season and leads the team with 12 walks. SJSU is 14-for-18 in stolen bases with Graham 4-for-4, Edwards 3-for-4 and Ashlynn Griffith 2-for-2.

The Spartans have used three pitchers with Caroline Bowman starting 10 games and pitching 47.0 innings. The RHP has a 2.38 ERA and thrown four complete games, allowing 48 hits, 22 runs (16 earned) and 17 walks while striking out 46. Jenessa Ullegue has thrown a team-high 58.2 innings and carries a team-best 1.31 ERA in 15 appearances, four starts and four complete games. Also a RHP, Ullegue has one save on the season and is 9-1 on record, allowing 45 hits and 12 runs (11 earned) with eight walks and 58 strikeouts. Lacie Ham has made 10 appearances with nine starts and has thrown four complete games. The RHP enters with a 2.78 ERA and has pitched 50.1 innings with a stat line of 59 hits, 26 runs (20 earned), 34 strikeouts and 15 walks. As a unit, SJSU has a conference-best 2.11 ERA. The Spartans have pitched two shutouts.

Among the MW teams, SJSU is fifth in batting average (.297), slugging percentage (.441), hits (184), total bases (273) and walks (71) and is third in on-base percentage (.379) . The Spartans lead in triples (9) and are second in sacrifice bunts (15) and have the best ERA in the conference at 2.11. Graham is tied for second in doubles (8) with Jules Ronquillo tied for third in sacrifice bunts (4). Ullegue leads the conference with a 1.31 ERA and is tied for second in the conference in wins (9).

Following the series with the Spartans, the Lobos will travel to Las Cruces for a game against the Aggies before hosting Utah State March 25-27.
