Local junior and adult equestrians win big at Carlsbad competition

Community snapshot: Las Cruces equestrians competed to high point championships at the Carlsbad Horseman’s Association Spring Show on April 24 at the Eddy County Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Carlsbad. The riders and their horses are students of Susie Ouderkirk, owner and trainer at Red Sky Farm in Las Cruces.

Three junior riders won first place prizes in Hunter Under Saddle, Hunter Over Fences and Equitation classes. Jordyn Sanchez, 8, rode her Thoroughbred Gelding, Kangaroo, to win in the Walk/Trot division. Reagan Warren, 14, rode Red Sky Farm’s Thoroughbred mare, Juniper Rain, to top finishes in the Level 1 Hunter and Equitation division, finishing the day with a high point reserve championship. Katlin Ohle, 15, on her Thoroughbred mare, Happy Go Lucky, won the Junior high point award with several first place finishes.

Three adult riders took home additional prizes and championships in the adult division. Bethany Skattum, who rides her Thoroughbred Gelding, Finn, finished as the Reserve Champion Adult rider. Lauren Meske, on Red Sky Farm’s, Devil’s Chocolate, walked away with the Champion Adult rider award. Ashley Leigh rode Sanchez’s, Kangaroo, to high finishes in the Level 1 division.
