Man who died in stalemate with MPs near Las Cruces is ID’d

UPDATE, September 6th: Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies identified the man who died last week in a standoff east of Las Cruces as 37-year-old Adam Alvarez.

Alvarez was found dead from a gunshot wound in a house in 8904 Corona, north of Highway 70 on Weisner Road, after an exchange of fire with authorities attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Friday.

UPDATE # 2, September 3: While executing a search warrant on a house that had been the scene of a stalemate the previous Friday, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies said they found a man who had been shot.

Officials said it is still unclear whether the man died in an exchange of fire with authorities or whether his wounds were self-inflicted.

The body was discovered around 3 p.m. in a house on the 8900 block of Corona north of Highway 70, which is east of Las Cruces.

UPDATE, September 3: A standoff that followed gunfire in an area east of Las Cruces ended late Friday afternoon when the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Deputies took two suspects into custody.

The crime scene remained active as MPs waited for a search warrant to arrive before entering the house.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Spet. 3: DONA ANA COUNTY, New Mexico – The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies appealed to residents of a section of Weisner Road near Highway 70 east of Las Cruces on Friday afternoon about a standoff with an armed man who was in a nearby area House had hidden to seek protection.

The authorities described the stalemate around 8910 Corona as an “active scene” and a SWAT team was on duty.

Sheriff officials said the incident began to unfold on a 911 call from a woman who reported hearing gunshots in the area; MPs who answered saw gunshots from inside the house.

There was limited exchange of fire, sheriff officials said, and a deputy sustained minor injuries after being hit by a bullet splinter.

Authorities said no other injuries had been reported.

Nearby schools have been closed and the after-school bus service has been rerouted around the crime scene, officials from Las Cruces Public Schools said.

In a brief statement, the Sheriff’s Office told people to avoid the area.

“There will be no entry into the area via Hanger Lake, Corona or Weisner. Please stay out of the area until further notice,” said the DASO statement. “We ask residents of the Luna Vista area to the north, Tammy Lane to the south, Hanger Lake to the west, and Coyote to the east to find shelter on the spot.”

Further details were not immediately known.
