Organ Mountain leaves district competition to Hobbs 56-28. fall

LAS CRUCES – Organ Mountain lost 56-28 to Hobbs on Saturday afternoon, dropping to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the district game. The Knights have now lost 10 of their last 11 District Games from 2019.

Senior quarterback Beto Garcia led the way for Organ Mountain with a total of 205 yards and two touchdowns, but the Knights failed to break their 21-7 halftime deficit. Organ Mountain gave up 35 points after the break and made no less than seven in the second half, although the Knights largely matched Hobbs’ scores.

The Organ Mountain defense forced a fumble on Hobbs’ first offensive streak of the afternoon and snapped an interception in the last seconds of the first half but otherwise struggled to stop the Eagles. Hobbs didn’t sting in the first half and scored on both Redzone trips.

The Knights reduced the two-score deficit to 14-7 with a 29-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver David Dorado 2:48 before halftime, but Hobbs returned the subsequent kick-off for a touchdown to take advantage of two scores towards the locker room.

Organ Mountain grabbed an onside kick to open the second half and drove more than 60 yards to make it a one-score game again, but the Knights struggled to stop Hobbs’ offensive attack. Organ Mountain scored again in the last three minutes of the third quarter, reducing the lead to 35:21, but only found the end zone in the last 30 seconds of the fourth quarter.

Hobbs scored 42:21 in the third game of the fourth quarter and scored again minutes later to take the lead 49:21. The Eagles drove into the dagger in a two-yard touchdown run with 5:19 remaining dagger, gaining a 35-point lead. Senior running back Zack Tarango scored in the final seconds on an 11-yard touchdown run to keep the clock from running out of time, even though his result only secured a 56-28 final.

Organ Mountain returns to Carlsbad next week as both schools look for their first county win of the season.

Mayfield vs. Chaparral, October 15th

Mayfield defeated Chaparral 51-0 in his district opener to move to 1-0 in the district and 4-4 overall.

The Trojans were kept goalless in the first quarter before exploding with 45 points in the second quarter. Mayfield led 45-0 at halftime and his third-quarter touchdown gave the Trojans a 51-0 lead. Their defense kept Chaparral goalless and Mayfield crossed to the finish line to claim his first county win.

The Trojans play next week at the Field of Dreams against Santa Teresa in a potentially district-defining matchup. Both schools are 1-0 in the district game after Santa Teresa Deming held 30-27 on Friday night.
