Police respond to car crash, shooting near El Paseo and University

LAS CRUCES – Three people were hospitalized as the result of a car crash followed by a shooting Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred near the intersection of El Paseo Road and University Avenue around 4 pm, according to a Las Cruces Police Department spokesperson.

A resident near the scene told the Sun-News he heard 20 to 30 shots fired during the altercation, which he said was preceded by a car crash. Afterwards, the resident said he could hear a man screaming, apparently suffering from a gunshot wound. The resident asked not to be identified.

The 30-year-old male gunshot victim was taken to a Las Cruces hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the spokesperson said. Two other people were taken to the hospital after suffering injuries from the car crash.

The incident is still under investigation.
